The Dow rose 75.42 points, or 0.5 percent, to 15,376.06. The index closed up three percent for the week, its best five-day performance since the week ending Jan. 4. Intel led the Dow higher. The Fed is buying $85 billion in bonds each month, and the consensus among investors is that the central bank will decide to reduce its buying to about $75 billion or $80 billion a month. The question is not whether the Fed will cut back on its bond buying but by how much, said Scott Clemons, chief investment strategist with Brown Brothers Harriman Wealth Management. The price of gold fell $22 to $1,308.60 an ounce. Oil slipped 39 cents to $108.21 a barrel. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note fell to 2.89 percent from 2.91 percent late Thursday. September has been very strong for stocks so far. The Dow is up 3.8 percent and the S&P 500 has gained 3.4 percent. In corporate news, Ulta Salon, Cosmetics & Fragrances surged $17.37, or 17 percent, to $117.50. The company reported a 28-percent increase in quarterly profit, thanks to stronger sales at its growing chain of stores. Supermarket chain Safeway rose $1.61, or 6 percent,Cheap Nike Giants Jersey, to $28.20 after analysts at Credit Suisse upgraded the stock to "outperform" from "underperform." Galena Biopharma plunged 34 cents, or 14.9 percent, to $1.94 after the company sold 17.5 million shares of stock at $2 a share.

Freshman quarterback Kenny Potter tossed a 30-yard touchdown pass to sophomore Mikail Parr, and Potter ran in from two yards out for another touchdown to cut the Pirates lead to 44-28 to start the fourth quarter.With 8:45 left in the fourth, Potter tossed a 10-yard touchdown to sophomore Joel Panteau to get within 10 points (44-34). A big 27-yard reception by sophomore Josiah Blandin (out of Long Beach Poly) on fourth down set up Potter s 43-yard TD strike to freshman Clayton Granch (from Valley Christian), and after a two-point conversion, LBCC was down by just two points with 5:06 to go in the game. The LBCC defense forced Ventura to turn over the ball on downs and the Vikings had one last shot taking over on their 24-yard line with 58 seconds to play.A Blandin 19-yard reception and a 10-yard run by Potter got LBCC in Ventura territory. Three plays later, freshman Matt Mengel lined up for the win to attempt a 33-yard field goal with 18 seconds left in the contest. But Antonio Cowart made the play of the game to block the kick and secure the victory for Ventura.Long Beach will look to snap its losing streak next Saturday (Sep 21) as the Vikings travel to Orange Coast College for a 6 p.m. non-conference game. Moore League Cross CountrySix Moore League cross country teams were in action over the weekend, at the Fastback Shootout (1.9- mile course at Mt. SAC) and the Laguna Hills Invitational (a 3-mile course at Laguna Hills High).The Poly boys team finished third overall at Mt. SAC, while still racing in training shoes. Freshman Hugo Novoa set a new meet record for freshman with a time of 10:19. Eris De La Torre,Cheap Nike Giants Jersey, Zach Ponce, Connor Ragland, and Christian Kerr followed to form the Poly top 5, with a time spread of just 27 seconds. Lakewood, Millikan and Wilson all traveled to the Laguna Hills Invite, where the Wilson girls and Millikan girls finished 28th and 37th out of 67 teams. On the boys side, Lakewood finished 48th, Wilson at 49th, and Millikan 56th. Poly, Lakewood, Millikan and Wilson will all be in action at the Woodbridge Invitational next Friday and Saturday night.Girls VolleyballSeveral local teams were at the Dave Mohs Tournament put on by Edison High over the weekend.The Moore League s top two teams, Lakewood and Poly, both got out of their pools. The Lancers defeated Capistrano Valley, Crean Lutheran and Newport Harbor, before falling to Mater Dei in the Round of 16. The Jackrabbits beat Santa Margarita and El Dorado,Eli Manning Elite White Jersey, then split with Palos Verdes to advance to the playoffs, where they fell to Corona Del Mar in the first round. Wilson, playing in the Division 2 bracket, beat Stockdale, Estancia, and Troy to take their pool, then topped Fountain Valley and St. Margaret s to reach the semifinals, where they fell to Villa Park. Milan Stokes led the Bruins in kills in each match, with 65 kills in six matches. Los Alamitos advanced out of a pool with Murrieta Valley,Eli Manning Jersey, Centennial and J Serra, and advanced all the way to the semifinals where they fell to Mater Dei.Lakewood and Poly will play in the Lancers gym on Wednesday at 4pm, in the first of two matches that will likely decide the Moore League title this season.
