So, a naked infant girl wailed alone in the nursery as busy nurses entered required data under the glare of computer screens. I stayed with the mother until she fell asleep. Later, I cried on my way home from the hospital.
I learned a great deal from this birth.
Now, during prenatal meetings, I relay this story without mentioning names or identifying details. This allows me to talk openly about the feelings that may arise while watching a beloved one give birth. I now understand how vital it is to nurture both the woman and her birth partner as they prepare for the unexpected emotional energy that can emerge in pregnancy, birth, and breastfeeding.
It s also vital to understand the difference between pain and suffering. Pain is what the body feels at key points in labor. You can see who phrased things succinctly and who has a better grasp of the longer narrative. Then you can combine the best.
The next step is to build what she calls a messaging document, starting with your most succinct, resonant messaging at the top maybe it s just one sentence It s what you want to say at cocktail parties, she says. Below that, you can dive a little deeper with the three key messages you d want to share with reporters about the specific problem your company is solving. Under that, you can get more detailed. Then make sure everyone has a copy.
PR isn t about hits, it isn t about placement it isn t You pay us and we ll get you a clip here or a mention on that blog. And it isn t about a first-day bump that gets no traction, Hammerling says. It s about focusing your voice. It s about finding your place in the market.
Developing messaging that resonates can be especially hard for complex technical and enterprise companies. As one of the first PR people working with NetSuite in 2003, Hammerling knows better than most. We were talking about data systems and software as a service before the cloud was a thing, and no one understood, she says. We had to simplify it down and not tell the whole story. NetSuite does a lot of things, but I needed to tell just that one main thing.
Some tough love was required. They had this very very long-winded messaging on what they were doing by explaining the SaaS model of the financial data of ERP and blah blah blah and I just told them, the mainstream business press doesn t know this world yet, and they don t care, she says. We filtered it down to this: the future is software as a service: a business that will enable companies to manage the data that is important to them online, and share it across platforms with many people. We had to get people to understand how and why it would relate to them. All it took was taking out the jargon and simplifying it so that people could imagine themselves using it.
Drawing analogies is a rookie crutch. Saying It s like Twitter, only for dog-sitters can be instructive, but it also takes away from your brand. The better thing to do is to boil your message down to its core, and then layer in other dimensions and functionality little by little. You may do 25 things and that s amazing, but what s that key thing you do? You have to make sure that s crystal clear. Tell the story around that then layer in the rest later. If you try to pack it all into one announcement or a press release, you ll lose your audience.
Hammerling points to a Brew client as one startup doing a good job of turning a complex concept into a single idea. It s taking technology, and using it for financial planning a function that you normally go to humans for. They really had to hone in on a message so that all kinds of people would feel good using it. You can see it in everything down to their tagline: We manage your investments for you. It s not about technology or business. It s about the personal we taking care of something for you.
This is a hard pill for some founders to swallow. Here they ve spent all this time building a multi-faceted product and they want to talk about all of its capabilities. But this is almost always a mistake, she says. It s hard to tell founders this kind of thing it s like telling them their child isn t ready for an honors class yet. They want to fast-forward. But she s seen it end badly too many times.
Hammerling cites photo sharing app Color as a prime and commonly used example. It burst onto the scene in 2011, having raised a whopping $41 million in its first round of funding. Its shocking success seemed clear as the company made the rounds with the media but the app s actual functionality was not. Nobody knew what the app did or what to expect once they downloaded it. Because of the money, people were expecting something great,Cheap Authentic Giants Jerseys Wholesale, and it just wasn t there. Color s demise was slow and quiet.
If she had been the one handling the company s PR, Hammerling says she wouldn t have let the money dictate the strategy. Of course they couldn t keep the funding quiet too many people were involved and it was an absurd amount. But I wouldn t have tried to do a full court press around the product at the same time, she says.
Prepping for Launch
Needless to say, Hammerling has seen a lot of missteps like this and more. She s had startups come to her three days before their scheduled launch asking for a turnkey media strategy. Of course, there s no such thing, she says. A solid media plan needs a runway of three to six months. Even if you have a couple weeks and marketing material, that s not enough. It s not going to be effective and it s going to look fake. When a company does this and plenty still do Hammerling says nine times out of 10 a launch will get botched, and they never get another shot at it.
Like creating messaging, preparing for an effective launch starts with a list of questions all designed to suss out your real motivations for doing PR:
Do you just want a lot of attention early on? Is the goal to attract a ton of users? Customers? Is the announcement more about recruiting top talent? Do you want to raise more capital or VC interest? The answers to these questions will shape your approach and your story. For the most part, different goals mean you go after different outlets. If you re trying to hire great engineers, you want to get on Reddit, Hacker News, or the blogs engineers you want are reading. If you re trying to get in front of investors, figure out what they read, and pitch those publications. Also, the more transparent you are about your goals, the more likely you are to achieve them, Hammerling says. Stick with your one basic, overarching message, you just need to tweak it a little bit for each audience. Sounds simple, but there are some caveats.
Avoid timing your launch with a funding announcement. Again, Color is a useful example. If you need to announce funding, try to separate it as much as you can from your product. Absolutely don t lead with it. A large round raises expectations, a small one lowers them. The amount of money can all too easily convince people what they should expect from your company and how likely it is to succeed. The product should have a chance to stand on its own.
On top of this, a surprising number of companies choose to launch before their product is ready at all. It s a head scratcher, but I ve seen so many startups determined to stick to their timelines that they ll unveil something before it works. Then all of the bad press and feedback sets them back six months or more, Hammerling says. You have to be patient. If you have to pull a plug, pull the marketing plug. Nobody s setting those deadlines but you.
Getting on the Media s Radar
Once you have your plan, it s all about placement. How do you get attention in the deafening echo chamber of today s technology news cycle? As Hammerling puts it unsurprisingly it s all about relationships. And you don t need to be a communications pro to make them. The obvious rules apply: be smart, pay attention, and don t be rude. But there s a bevy of other hacks for getting noticed.

While there is no set number of reporters an entrepreneur should work with, there s value in forging meaningful relationships with a good handful in your area and broader industry, Hammerling says. When she first got her start, the tech media was less built out, and she made it a point getting to know 15 of the most influential reporters in the sector. Now they re running their own publications, their own bureaus, their own blogs, she says. If you re a young entrepreneur, get to know the younger guys too that s just as important because these are people who share your mindset. They are entrepreneurial too, and they re going to be the big guys down the road.
Don t be afraid to reach out. The reporters covering tech want to hear your story. They re actively looking to build relationships with entrepreneurs. 5) Romo slides in the pocket and throws a back-shoulder bullet to Bryant on a drag route for Dallas' first TD.

Both QBs made just about every throw in the book, but when the level of duress is factored in it's impossible to say that Manning outperformed Romo in any visible way. Naturally, differential duress was a factor, because...
Aspect 2 - Romo shall be supported by ... no one While both quarterbacks delivered superlative shows, only one received front-rank successful play performance from his offensive backfield. The idea behind the successful play metric is evaluating each play based on whether it gained the required yardage to be considered "successful" based on situational down and distance. The generally accepted standard is gaining over 40 percent of the yards needed for a conversion on first down, 60 percent of the yardage needed on second down, and obviously whatever is required for a successful conversion on third down.
Romo's backfield mate, , contributed successful plays on seven out of his 13 touches in the game. 53 percent is a solid Success rate against one of the league's better run defenses, but it amounted to pebbles skittering downslope in Sunday's offensive avalanche. What's more, Murray's successes were all early -- in the fourth quarter, his only contribution was a lame leg-tug in blitz pickup that resulted in a holding penalty.
That effort stood in sharp, sharp contrast to the efforts of Denver's backs. Knowshon Moreno, and combined for 24 Successful Plays on 36 touches, with Moreno contributing 17 of those plays while absolutely tormenting Dallas. Peyton Manning was basically able to spam the Staples' Easy Button two dozen times in this one -- and while some of those plays came on passes, most of the throws were ones that Cooper Manning could have pulled off.
Only tent revivalists and intraveneous drug users can fully identify with the warm, life-affirming glow that suffuses Jason Garrett when he abandons the run. It's tough to hammer Garrett too hard for it in this one, as Romo was putting on a master class and Dallas just wasn't going to keep pace any other way. But don't forget the extent to which Romo was carrying the load alone.
And his defense made sure it was one heck of a load. Neither D approached acceptability in this one, but the Cowboys never gave Romo a bit of breathing room. Of course, on an opponent-adjusted basis this probably wasn't their worst effort of the season. With the year is putting together the Cowboys' Week One effort is going to look absolutely dreadful in hindsight, and getting ripped up and down by a soon-to-be 7-9 squad that handed three INTs to the isn't pretty, either. But while their effort might qualify as "somewhat game," their results kept Romo's back against the wall.
It goes without saying for any frequent Cowboys observer that special teams were a net negative for Dallas in this one,Denver Broncos Jerseys Wholesale, as they have been in about 75 percent of games since Joe Avezzano left the sidelines. It wasn't as dreadful a third-phase defeat as Dallas typically endures, but a bad hold and a bone-headed bring-out decision started two Dallas drives inside their own 20 while they surrendered a 40-yard return to on the other side. Finally, the pass protection wasn't much of a contest. On the previous snap, Romo pulled the ball down and was sacked, putting Dallas in a second and 16. On the fatal play, Denver dropped eight men into coverage and got near-immediate pressure as the Broncos' Mitch Unrein -- who, inexplicably, has yet to draw many John Randle comparisons in his career -- whipped first-round center with a swim move and got into Romo's lap. Rather than eat the ball again for a 3rd and 20, followed by a punt and a Broncos victory what would have been as inevitable as the heat death of the Universe, Romo threw off his back foot and got picked by the Broncos' Danny Trevethan.
Of course, this play was unforgivable because of its timing -- it was Dallas' last chance to take the lead,Abdusalami canvasses new approach to national security, and throwing the INT set Denver up with a drive-thru "would you like a field goal or a touchdown with that?" choice that they drove inside the one before a game-icing field goal. Manning's third-quarter INT where he underthrew Eric Decker by four yards with no significant pressure was forgivable because Denver won.
Aspect 4 - A one-play judgement shall be decreed If the above seems like an unseemly marshalling of facts in order to mount an overall defense of Romo, please don't take it that way. If nothing else, it is vital to understand that Romo's countless on-target passes, great escapes and hilarious lack of backfield and defensive support while battling one of the game's all-time greats were rendered totally meaningless thanks to that final interception.
Only in viewing his performace through the narrowest, most blinkered and football-ignorant lens can we maintain the "Romo is a choker" narrative. And without that narrative getting spewed, this simply could not be the quintessential Tony Romo game.

General Motors Co. (GM)’s Escalade, the large sport-utility vehicle that fueled the imagery of rap music and fictional gangsters, is getting a makeover.
GM tonight displayed a redesigned 2015 Cadillac Escalade in New York with a sleeker exterior and a wood-trim interior that are among the changes that the Detroit-based automaker has made to boost sales of the large luxury SUV.
“The 2015 Escalade is completely new and elevated in design and technology,” Bob Ferguson, head of Cadillac, said in a statement today. “The clear objective is to once again assume the leadership position among luxury SUVs.”
The Escalade is one of 10 new or redesigned Cadillacs that GM is bringing out in the U.S. by the end of 2015. The product push includes the ATS, a compact sedan, which has helped increase Cadillac U.S. sales 29 percent this year through September.
U.S. sales of the all versions of the Escalade, which peaked in 2004 at 62,250, fell to 23,Cheap Authentic Giants Jerseys Wholesale,340 last year, according to researcher Autodata Corp. Sales of Daimler AG (DAI)’s Mercedes-Benz GL, a seven-seat SUV, rose 3.6 percent last year to 26,042.
Escalade faces more competition from high-end SUVs in coming years. ‘Big Threat’
The current Escalade starts at $63,745 with a fully loaded version costing about $90,000, according to GM. The price of the 2015 model, which starts production in next year’s second quarter, hasn’t been released.
“If people are spending that much money, they may opt for a more exotic sounding nameplate,” Jessica Caldwell, an analyst with Edmunds.com, a website that tracks auto sales, said. “That’s a big threat.”
The success of the Escalade, which was first introduced in October 1998, helped keep Cadillac culturally relevant as it attempted to reignite interest in the luxury brand the past 15 years.
Tony Soprano, the mob boss played by James Gandolfini, drove a Cadillac Escalade in HBO’s “The Sopranos.” Jennifer Lopez crowed about it. Ludacris even included it in his rap song “What’s Your Fantasy?”
‘A Statement’

“It’s people being honest with themselves and downsizing and not really needing the space that the Escalade has,” Caldwell said. “The Escalade is great for an executive, Town Car-like vehicle. But for a family it is a lot of space and fairly large to maintain and keep around.”
While the large SUV market has fallen, they remain profitable for the automaker. The SUVs are one of its strengths even as it has pushed to create some of its best sedans in generations, including the Chevrolet Impala, which Yonkers, New York-based Consumer Reports ranked best among all sedans.
Profit Margins

The jumbo-size Escalade ESV’s average transaction price, or what a customer paid after incentives, rose to $76,126 this year through September compared with $57,117 in 2003, according to Edmunds. Escalade shares engineering with Chevrolet and GMC large SUVs, which are all built on the automaker’s truck platform that was redesigned in 2013. GM dominates the large non-luxury SUV segment. The combined segment market share of Chevy and GMC large SUVs in the U.S. rose to 61 percent this year through July compared with 58 percent in 2004, according to Edmunds. Ford Motor Co. (F)’s large SUV market share fell to 11 percent this year compared with 18 percent during all of 2004.
Richer Buyers
The Suburban-size Escalade ESV attracts a richer buyer than the Chevrolet Suburban, according to GM figures. The median household income of an Escalade ESV owner is $259,060 compared with $135,Waterville woman in stable condition after being rescued fro,000 for the Suburban. The median income for buyers of the smaller Escalade is $178,222 which is higher than the $120,429 of the Cadillac brand, according to GM.
The regular Escalade is the size of a Chevrolet Tahoe.
The new Escalade’s interior is quieter and has seats engineered to be more comfortable and look more sculpted, GM said. The front seats have more than 1.5 inches (3.8 centimeters) of additional headroom and more than 4 inches of additional legroom than the outgoing model.
“It’s all in the details in that segment,” Caldwell said. “It has to be more of an upgrade in those so that you feel like you’re surrounding yourself in luxury amenities.”
